In this year’s opening keynote address, Charles Dickens and the Great Theatre of the World, to be presented in Ballarat and Melbourne, acclaimed British actor, writer and director Simon Callow draws from his latest biography to explore the life of literary giant Charles Dickens, 200 years after the author’s birth.
The opening weekend also celebrates a literary coup with an all-star team from the internationally iconic magazine, The New Yorker featuring editorial director Henry Finder, eminent art critic Peter Schjeldahl, staff writer David Grann, pop-music critic Sasha Frere-Jones and cartoonist Roz Chast.
And in the final week of Festival, one of our most provocative thinkers Germaine Greer contemplates the vagaries of an Australian language in Speaking Australian, and Robert Dessaix considers the particular pleasures of aging in a society infatuated with youth in The Time of Our Lives.
