Hitomi KaneharaHitomi Kanehara is a Japanese novelist. She was born in Tokyo on the 8th August 1983. Her first novel Snakes and Earrings won a new writer’s literary award, the Subaru Prize in 2003, and also won the most prominent Japanese literary award, the Akutagawa Prize, in 2004. One of the judges, celebrated writer Ryu Murakami, said her book was 'easily the top choice, receiving the highest marks of any work since I became a member of the selection panel'. The original Japanese edition of Snakes and Earrings has since topped bestseller lists and sold over a million copies, and has been translated into 28 languages. Another title Autofiction has also been translated into 6 languages.
She writes and publishes in literary magazines, fashion magazines, internet websites and several kinds of media. In recent years, she has written many short stories and will publish two collections of short stories in 2009.
