Think inside the square
Welcome to the 2008 Melbourne Writers Festival! This year's festival is based in the heart of Melbourne at Federation Square, in the BMW Edge, the two cinemas in the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), and other venues in the Square. Please click here for full details. The Atrium is the festival hub with the festival bookshop, numerous places to sit and eat, and also one our two box offices. We have outdoor events; free events: live streaming from the Edinburgh Festival: children's activities: the festival club: walks: dinners: Big Ideas at the RMIT Capitol Theatre and of course our two keynote addresses at the Melbourne Town Hall. Plus our popular professional development program with masterclasses and workshops at the City Museum, State Library of Victoria and the Immigration Museum is back with an extended program.. Keynote addresses: Friday 22 August Germaine Greer at 7.00pm Augusten Burroughs at 9.30pm. There are printed programs in outlets throughout Melbourne including bookshops and libraries. Programs will also be available at the venues. Our two box offices in Federation Square will have programs - the one facing Flinders Street station is open business hours from July 18th. If you have problems getting a printed program, just ring us up and we'll mail one out to you. You can book online, or by phone 1300 722 211. This website has a search engine to help you find out what's on - by venue, date, type and author, and each event is linked directly to the box-office so it will be very easy to find out not just what is on and but also to book tickets. Carbon Neutral Festival In common with many other arts festival, the Melbourne Writers Festival offsets all its energy usage, including the flights of all writers coming to the festival, and encourages all audience members to use public transport to help reduce carbon emissions. Download Public Transport Information The Festival box office offers an option of $1 per ticket to help offset carbon emissions from the festival. If you buy 5 tickets, an additional $5 goes towards helping the festival continue to be carbon neutral. Getting to the festival If you must use your car, then the nearest car park is accessed from Russell Street or Batman Ave (Exhibition Street extension - City Link) The current car park rates are: Early Bird $12 (In before 10am, out after 3.00pm) First hour: $4.00, Half Hourly rate: $3 (each additional half hour or part thereof) Maximum Daily rate: $34 (Maximum daily rate applies if ticket is lost) Flat Night (entry after 4pm) and Weekend rate: $8 But remember that there are many other ways to get to Fed Square which are cheaper, easier to use, and more environmentally friendly. Schools' Program 2008 now open for bookings The 2008 Melbourne Writers' Festival Schools' Program will run from Monday, August 25 to Wednesday, August 27. Please download the program on the Under 18 Zone. The festival is also presenting a variety of authors and illustrators in WordPlay at ArtPlay - a program of literary events, workshops and creative games for kids, running each weekend of the festival.
