The honest trader

All's fair in love, war and free trade? Discussing moral responsibility in the global marketplace, Duncan Green begins with the contention that free trade favours the rich. He is discussing this with Kenneth Davidson, co-editor of Dissent and Heikki Patomäki and this session will be chaired by Miriam Lyons, from the Centre of Policy Development.

Kenneth Davidson is a senior business columnist with The Age. He studied economics at Melbourne University in the early 60s and remains a committed Keynesian and an opponent of economic rationalism. He was economic correspondent for the The Australian from 1965 to 1974 and economics editor of The Age from 1974 to 1993. He was winner of the Walkley award for best news story in 1977 and the National Press Club/ Ford Australia Award for Canberra Press Gallery Journalist of the Year in 1980. Other postions include: fomer member National Health and Medical Research Council Ethics Committee 1990-1992, editor Australian Rationalist 1993-98, co-editor Dissent 1999 – current. Dissent is a new forum for serious analysis of public policy issues in plain and accessible language. Dissent's discussion of public affairs includes social and economic policy, education, politics, science and the environment, cultural matters, media and the arts.

Heikki Patomäki is at RMIT and also a Professor of International Relations at the University of Helsinki, Finland. Until 2003, he was a Professor of World Politics and Economy at the Nottingham Trent University, UK. In addition, he is the Research Director of NIGD, the Network Institute for Global Democratisation and the Vice-Director of the Centre of Excellence in Global Governance Research at the University of Helsinki His publications comprise nine monographs, many edited volumes, more than 100 academic papers, and numerous popular articles.

His recent books include Democratising Globalisation: The Leverage of the Tobin Tax (Zed Books, 2001); After International Relations: Critical Realism and the (Re)Construction of World Politics (Routledge, 2002); and with T.Teivainen, A Possible World: Democratic Transformation of Global Institutions (Zed Books, 2004). He is also the co-author of the Draft Treaty on Global Currency Transaction Tax. His most recent book in English is Political Economy of Global Security. Future Crises and Changes of Global Governance (Routledge, 2007).
