Beyond your navel

The humorous essay must be more than a chance to crack wise. Shows why wit seems hollow when not in the service of some point or principle. Humorist David Rakoff shows how to make your funny stories reflect the wider world and make readers think as well as laugh. The class will explore those aspects that lift the humourous essay above the mere memoir. It will seek to take the humourous essay form, whether first-person recollection or observational essay, beyond its narrow focus, making for both a richer reading and writing experience. David will discuss how the humourous essay can be reflective of larger realities, be they political, cultural, emotional, etc., without descending into the preachy or earnest.
